Next Doors Garden: Diploma Project
Next doors garden and house are derelict, in that there doesn't appear to be an owner. various colourful myths surround the house. Today's narrative from Anne two doors up (she moved here in 1961, so local knowledge prevails) is that in 1959 the old man died and no know relatives existed. In fact according to Anne the house was at one time was one large dwelling, split in two as the brothers fell out, originally a the mill owners house.
Somehow only the front house got sold, leaving the now split off back house with no address and no owner. Squatters moved in a 7 and a half foot Carribean by all accounts, but the council got wind and off they went. Consquently it appears that the council have taken possession, put a roof on in the 80's as it was affecting the front house. Apparently according to Anne, a couple of people have tried to buy it from the council but with no luck. So how about a community house and garden for SIDWIGCRES our local neighbourhood community??
Stella is concerned about us 'doing' up the garden as the heavies might be sent round to nobble our knees.. and that's another ripe urban myth! So we had better contact the council to see if they know anything about it, and whether we can get permission to garden...
In the meantime, before any designs, I have decided due to weather and time restraints to start clearing the garden space next door. It has huge brambles, overgrown Budlea and lots of rubbish. The design will need to incorporate the least amount of hard labour as possible, raised beds as inspired by 'urban degraded, land gardeners.
